The fact that Microsoft has started to gain interest in disease management technology says quite a bit about the growth we are about to see in the industry, particularly as technology itself becomes more portable, user friendly, and undeniably common in our society.
ReplyDeleteAlthough mobile health applications directed at disease management already exist (EndoGoddess is a perfect example as it is also diabetes related) a major issue that exists is the lack of cohesion in the way the apps work. If you don't believe me take a look at a few of them at: http://www.imedicalapps.com/
I believe that the addition of a powerhouse, such as Microsoft, to the market will only strengthen the position of health applications in the future of both healthcare and technology.
I was actually thinking about something like this when I was at my IPPE at the pharmacy. I see patients getting their diabetes meds and the pharmacist would ask about if the patient is performing glucose testing and sometimes the answers were "no" for different reasons. But with this new technology, maybe pharmacies will be utilizing it and patients will be aware of their glucose because they'll be reminded.
ReplyDeleteI think this is a great way to enhance compliance because many time our lifestyles affect our diseases in different ways because we forgot our medical appointments, our medication schedules and in the case of diabetics their blood sugar measurements. This is very important for them because doctors can evaluate the effectivenes of meds. So, text messaging can be a good way to remind them about their chronic disease management.
